Meet the Locals: Where to Spot Kangaroos, Koalas & Dolphins on Tour

A wildlife-focused guide

One of the most memorable aspects of exploring Western Australia is the opportunity to encounter its unique wildlife. From iconic kangaroos and sleepy koalas to playful dolphins, these native animals offer a special glimpse into Australia’s natural world. With Australian Pinnacle Tours, you can see many of these creatures in the wild on a range of guided day tours from Perth.

Kangaroos – Australia’s Famous Hoppers

No trip to Australia is complete without seeing a kangaroo. Known for their strong legs, powerful tails, and distinctive hop, kangaroos are a national icon—and best observed in their natural habitat.

Where to spot them:

Our Pinnacle, Yanchep and Swan Valley tour includes a visit to Yanchep, where western grey kangaroos can often be seen grazing near the walking trails and resting in shaded areas. They’re usually most active early in the morning and late in the day.

You may also catch sight of kangaroos on our Wave Rock tour, especially in the open farmlands and bushland of the Wheatbelt region. They often appear along the roadside or near forest clearings.

Koalas – The Sleepy Tree-Dwellers

Although not native to Western Australia, koalas have found a safe haven in Yanchep National Park. These marsupials spend most of their time resting high up in eucalyptus trees, conserving energy between meals of eucalyptus leaves.

Where to spot them:

On the Pinnacles Desert & 4WD Adventure Day tour, we stop at Caversham Wildlife Park, one of the best places in Western Australia to see koalas up close. Here, you’ll have the chance to view these iconic marsupials and learn about their habits from park staff and even take a photo next to one. It’s a unique and memorable opportunity to connect with one of Australia’s most beloved animals.

Dolphins – The Ocean’s Playful Residents

Western Australia’s coastline is home to a variety of marine life, with dolphins being among the most commonly seen and most beloved. Bottlenose dolphins are known to frequent the coastal waters around Perth and the South West.

Where to spot them:

On our Margaret River Chocolate, Nougat, Wine & Coastal tour, there are several scenic coastal stops including the Busselton Jetty region, where dolphins are often spotted close to shore. While sightings aren’t guaranteed, the chances are good—especially in calm conditions.

During the right season (typically June to November), you may also spot migrating humpback whales from the coastline.

Other Wildlife Encounters

In addition to kangaroos, koalas, and dolphins, many of our tours offer the chance to observe a variety of other native species.

  • Emus: Australia’s largest bird may be seen in open scrub areas, especially on our inland tours like Wave Rock.

  • Echidnas: These spiny insect-eaters are sometimes spotted near bush trails or crossing quiet roads.

  • Birdlife: Keep an eye out for galahs, black cockatoos, honeyeaters, and other colourful native birds on every tour.

Our guides are experienced in spotting and pointing out wildlife along the way, adding an extra layer of discovery to each experience.

Responsible Wildlife Watching

Australian Pinnacle Tours is committed to offering respectful and environmentally conscious wildlife experiences. We ensure that animals are observed in their natural environment, not in captivity, and promote practices that protect their habitats and well-being.

What this means for our guests:

  • Always maintain a respectful distance from wildlife

  • Avoid feeding animals

  • Stick to designated paths and viewing platforms

  • Follow guidance from your tour driver-guide

This approach helps ensure that future generations can enjoy the same rich experiences with Australia’s native fauna.
